Public Sidewalk Control Joint Tooling for
Palm Haven
*A San Jose Historic Conservation Area*

Note: If the area of sidewalk to be repaired does not equal a
multiple of 20", take the total distance and find the closest multiple to 20".
Example:
If the distance to replace is 12' or 144", there would be 4" leftover from the
seven 20" sections. (144/20=7.2 sections) The closest round number to 7.2 is
7. So the contractor should adjust the width of EACH of the sections to make the
best match. In this case, the extra 4 inches needs to be absorbed in the 7
sections. 4/7" (or rounded to 1/2") is added to each 20" section. This results
in 7 sections at 20 1/2" each, totaling 143 1/2". Being within 1/2"
overall is close enough for the
contractor to match.
This approach should always be used to maintain the tooling pattern as close to
the original.
If your contractor balks at any of this, you should not use his/her services. The method and expertise required here in control joint tooling is a basic function of all licensed and experienced concrete contractors.
